A subject-by-subject look at the CBSE curriculum
The Central Board of Secondary Education, known as CBSE, is one of the most widely followed Indian curricula in the UAE. Families in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi often choose it for its strong grounding in mathematics and science, while still covering languages, arts, computing and sports. Here is what students actually study, grade by grade.
Mathematics
A backbone subject from Grade 1 through Grade 12, moving from arithmetic and geometry into algebra, trigonometry, calculus and statistics.
Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Introduced together as general science in primary, then split into three separate subjects from Grade 9 onward, each with dedicated lab work.
English
A compulsory language across all grades, covering literature, grammar, comprehension and writing skills.
Second and Third Languages

Why the science and maths track carries so much weight
The reputation of CBSE in the UAE is built largely on its treatment of mathematics and the natural sciences. Textbooks published by the NCERT introduce concepts early and revisit them each year with more depth, so a student in Grade 6 who is learning about atoms will meet the same ideas again in Grade 9 with equations and again in Grade 11 with quantum models.
From Grade 11, students in the science stream typically choose Physics, Chemistry, and either Biology or Mathematics as their core group, with an optional fifth subject such as Computer Science, Psychology or Physical Education. This structure is what makes CBSE graduates competitive for engineering, medical and technology programs in India, the UAE and abroad.

Beyond textbooks: arts, sports and hands-on learning
CBSE has moved a long way from the image of a purely academic, exam-focused system. Current schools in the UAE run weekly periods for art, music, dance and drama, and most maintain club programmes for coding, robotics, debate, chess and Model United Nations. Physical education is compulsory, and schools compete in inter-school leagues for football, cricket, basketball and athletics.
The 2020 revision of India’s National Education Policy also pushed CBSE toward more project-based and practical work. Chemistry, physics and biology labs are now used far more often, and computer science classrooms include real coding practice rather than only theory. How subjects are grouped by stage
- Primary (Grades 1 to 5). English, a second language, mathematics, general science (EVS), social studies, computer basics, art, music and physical education.
- Middle school (Grades 6 to 8). English, two additional languages, mathematics, science (as one integrated subject), social science, IT, art and PE.
- Secondary (Grades 9 and 10). Five main subjects for the board exam: English, a second language, mathematics, science (physics, chemistry and biology combined) and social science, plus health & PE, art and an optional skill subject such as AI or financial literacy.
- Senior secondary (Grades 11 and 12). Students choose a stream, Science, Commerce or Humanities, and take four to five electives plus English. Science students commonly take Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology, and Computer Science.

What to check before you enrol
- Arabic and Islamic studies: confirm the school follows Ministry of Education rules for these subjects, which apply to all schools operating in the Emirates.
- Language options: if your child already speaks Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil or French at home, check that it is offered as a second or third language.
- Lab and technology facilities: ask to see the science labs, computer rooms and, in newer schools, robotics or maker spaces.
- Stream choice at Grade 11: not every school offers all combinations. Confirm that Biology plus Mathematics, or Computer Science plus Commerce subjects, will be available if your child needs them.
- Assessment mix: CBSE now blends internal assessments, projects and board exams. A good school will explain that mix clearly.
Frequently asked questions
Is Arabic compulsory in CBSE schools in the UAE?
Yes. All private schools operating in the UAE, including CBSE schools, must teach Arabic. For non-Arab students it is typically taught as Arabic B from Grade 1 to Grade 9, while Arab students follow Arabic A. Islamic Studies is also compulsory for Muslim students.
Can a CBSE student switch to Biology or Mathematics in Grade 11?
Grade 11 is where students pick a stream and choose four or five electives. Most CBSE schools in the UAE allow either Biology or Mathematics, and some allow both as a combined PCMB group. The choice depends on Grade 10 results and on which combinations that specific school runs.
How much time do CBSE students spend on arts, sports and clubs?
Primary and middle school students usually get several periods a week for art, music and physical education, along with time set aside for club activities. In Grades 9 and 10 the focus shifts toward board preparation, but PE and one activity slot are still built into the timetable in most schools.
Are practical lab classes really part of the CBSE program?
Yes, and they carry marks. From Grade 9 onward, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science all include practical exams that count toward the final grade. Schools are expected to run regular experiments, keep lab records and hold internal viva sessions.
How does CBSE compare to the British or American curriculum in the UAE?
CBSE leans more heavily on mathematics and the sciences and follows a single national syllabus. British and American curricula are broader at the top end, with more subject choice and different assessment styles. The right fit usually depends on where the family plans to send the child for university and on the child’s own strengths.
Is CBSE accepted by universities outside India?
CBSE Grade 12 results are accepted by universities in the UAE, the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia and many others. Some universities may ask for additional English proficiency tests such as IELTS or TOEFL, and a few competitive programmes ask for SAT scores, but the qualification itself is well recognised.
